Ankle sprains can occur when one or more ligaments in the ankle are overstretched or torn, usually due to a sudden, twisting injury of the ankle. Sprains can range from mild to severe, but in all cases, a full recovery is vital to prevent future ankle injuries. For all ankle sprains, it is important to protect the sprained ankle from further injury by resting it. Applying ice, compressing, and elevating the injured ankle can help reduce swelling and inflammation. Taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs can be useful for pain management. Gentle stretching and strengthening exercises can help during the recovery process as well. Moderate to severe sprains will usually require further treatments to ensure proper healing. These may include footwear modifications, wearing orthotics, going to physical therapy, wearing an ankle brace or support, and in particularly severe cases, undergoing surgery to repair a torn ligament. If you have sprained your ankle, it is suggested that you seek the care of a podiatrist.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?
Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.
What Are the Symptoms?
Preventing a Sprain
Treatment of a Sprain
Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity. Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.
If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

Many nerves run to, from, and through the feet. When you experience symptoms of nerve problems, like burning foot pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness, it could be a sign of nerve damage. There are various nerve problems that can affect the feet. Injuries to the feet, such as tarsal tunnel syndrome or Morton’s neuroma, medical conditions like diabetes or Charcot Marie Tooth disease, and certain medications can cause nerve pain. Problems that originate in the spine, such as a herniated disk, spinal stenosis, and peripheral neuropathy, can all lead to foot pain as well. If you have nerve pain in your feet, it is important to let your podiatrist know. Early diagnosis can mitigate symptoms and slow progression or prevent the problem from worsening.
Neuropathy
Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with one of our podiatrists from Podiatry Inc.. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.
What Is Neuropathy?
Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.
Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:
Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.
Treatment
To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.
Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.

It is generally easy to notice a bunion when it has developed on your foot. A bunion is a bump that forms on the side of the big toe that can make wearing shoes difficult for the majority of the day. A common reason why bunions can form is from wearing shoes that do not have adequate room for the toes to move freely in. Additionally, they may form from genetic reasons. If the bunion grows, it can change the shape of the foot, and larger shoes may need to be purchased. Ballet dancers are often at risk of developing bunions because of the constant stress the feet endure while practicing specific poses. Pregnancy can lead to the formation of bunions, which may come from hormonal changes that can affect the feet. Mild relief may be found when a protective pad is worn over the bunion, and this can be helpful in protecting it against friction that can come from wearing shoes. If you notice a bump has formed on your foot, it is strongly suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can perform a proper diagnosis and offer you correct treatment methods.

What Is a Bunion?
A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.
Why Do Bunions Form?
Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary
Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions
How Are Bunions Diagnosed?
Doctors often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your doctor.

Painful deformities, such as hammertoes, can be treated. Stop living with foot pain, and have beautiful feet again!
As weight is being transferred from the heel to the forefoot when walking, the foot naturally rolls inwards resulting in what is referred to as pronation. If the foot rolls too far inwards, overpronation occurs. Overpronation can lead to a variety of overuse injuries, especially in runners, because of the additional stress placed on muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the feet, as well as the ankles and knees. Common injuries that can occur due to overpronation include plantar fasciitis, shin splints, tarsal tunnel syndrome, bunions, or Achilles tendonitis. Patients who believe that they may have an overpronated gait should consult with a podiatrist who will perform a gait analysis. Upon completing the gait analysis, a podiatrist will be able to offer a variety of treatment options, such as orthotics.

Biomechanics in Podiatry
Podiatric biomechanics is a particular sector of specialty podiatry with licensed practitioners who are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and lower leg. Biomechanics deals with the forces that act against the body, causing an interference with the biological structures. It focuses on the movement of the ankle, the foot and the forces that interact with them.
A History of Biomechanics
Modern technological improvements are based on past theories and therapeutic processes that provide a better understanding of podiatric concepts for biomechanics. Computers can provide accurate information about the forces and patterns of the feet and lower legs.
Understanding biomechanics of the feet can help improve and eliminate pain, stopping further stress to the foot.
